Clueless meets Jenna Evans Welch in this young adult rom-com about a spoiled American teenager who faces some major culture shock—and potential romance—when she jets off to Bangladesh for her sister's wedding.
Bibi Hossain was supposed to get her first kiss this summer.

Too bad her father finds out and grounds her for breaking his most arcane rule: No boys until your sister gets married.

Just when Bibi thinks she'll be stuck helping him at their popular fried chicken chain until school reopens, her oh-so-perfect older sister Halima drops a bombshell: she's marrying the heir of a princely estate turned tea garden in Bangladesh. Soon, Bibi is hopping on the next flight to Sylhet for Halima's Big Fat Bengali Wedding, hoping Abbu might even rethink the dating ban while they're there.

Unfortunately, the stuffy Rahmans are a nightmare—especially Sohel, the groom's younger brother. The only thing they can agree on is that their siblings are not a good match. But as the two scheme to break their siblings up, Bibi finds it impossible to stay away from the infuriatingly handsome boy.

Could her own happily ever after be brewing even as she stirs up trouble for her sister's engagement—or is there more steeping at the tea estate than Bibi knows?

A romance brews on a tea estate in Bangladesh. Sixteen-year-old Bibi Hossain finds herself traveling to Sylhet, Bangladesh--far from her Paterson, New Jersey, home--when her older sister, Halima, surprises everyone by announcing her plan to marry. Halima also defers her Princeton Law enrollment; she and her fianc, Sunny Rahman, plan to spend some time living on Sunny's family's tea estate. Even though Bibi's own family is relatively wealthy--her father founded the Royal Fried Chicken restaurant chain and is a generous donor to their mosque--when she sees the Rahmans' opulent home, Bibi can't help but think she's in a version ofCrazy Rich Asians. Never mind the frosty reception from the future in-laws, there's the added complication of Sunny's very cute brother, Sohel, who keeps getting Bibi into trouble. Convinced their siblings' marriage is a "train wreck," the two team up for Operation Breakup. Complicating matters, Bibi's grandmother in Bangladesh produces the Great Big Book of Biodatas--possible matches for Bibi to meet. The story has multiple strands, most of them deftly woven together, including some interesting snippets of history, such as the colonial history around tea plantations. While readers may not believe that "Daddy's little princess" Bibi, who cherishes her Louboutin boots, transforms enough to truly find picking tea leaves "meditative," this is a quick and fun read about finding love in the most unexpected place. Family dynamics, love, and dating make for a bracing cuppa.(Romance. 13-18)

Gr 9 Up-Sixteen-year-old Bibi is surprised when her sister, Halima, announces her impending marriage to Sunny. Meeting the in-laws leads Bibi's family to travel to Sylhet, Bangladesh, where Sunny's family owns a renowned tea garden. It quickly becomes clear that the families are at odds; not to mention, a disastrous run-in with Sunny's younger brother, Sohel, leaves Bibi worried about her sister's future. Despite their animosity, Bibi and Sohel decide to team up to stop their siblings' wedding. However, scheming forces Bibi and Sohel to spend ample time together where more than plotting begins to occur. Reminiscent of the film Clueless, Taslim builds a fun rom-com with a loveable hopeless romantic at its center. Bibi is the second child that yearns for someone to notice her vibrant self. Sohel is the determined younger sibling striving to build a better legacy for his family's business. While opposites, both struggle with feeling inadequate next to their seemingly perfect older siblings. Bibi and Sohel's connection feels natural as their often-comedic banter and adventures add vibrancy alongside the lush descriptions of the magical tea garden and food. Though some points are predictable (and quick to resolve), the second-chance relationships that blossom in this story are worth the read. Biodatas on Bibi's potential love matches are sprinkled between chapters with cheeky notes from Sohel and Bibi, adding charm and laughs. VERDICT With Clueless vibes for a new generation, this rom-com of disastrous meet-cute to happily ever after will brighten any reader's day.-Emily Walker
